"hahaha, you're so young and so wet behind your ears. what is so special about your products? so what if they are all your so-called tenderly handmade and limited editions or one-of-a-kind? i can just buy a sample from you, give it to a factory in china, mass produce it in tens of thousands and at the cheapest prices, with the best factory workmanship and quality control, sell them like hotcakes and earn so much for profit for so little effort, and there's nothing you can do about it... you've so much more to learn, too idealistic and naive to make it in this industry, like so many of your generation today."
just interested to know how you would respond to that...
7 blabbers:
Sad to acknowledge, but you probably wouldn't hear the last of all these until you've "made it". This fella is obviously a very business person who does not care about the process of design, craft, and art. His sole purpose is money. Is he a brand owner or someone in the industry? If he is, I have to say that it is exactly people like him that is making the design, arts and fashion industry in Singapore a very sad, backward, and uninnovative one. My two cents worth.
OMG!!!!!!!!! ;O that makes me so F$#@#@$% mad, we are not naive, we know how the world works, were are just tired of the same bullshit, we are trying to make a difference, there's a lot of stuff out there that suck even if its "mass produce in tens of thousands and at the cheapest prices, with the best factory workmanship and quality control", and some people don't understand that because they don't create , they just exploiting people What is so special about your products? there special because you care and that love and dedication you put in to your creation stands out!
they don't understand because they are greedy people that don't care about nothing rather than money, they may never feel the joy of creation.
they are just pigs!
those are empty words,he is so jealous of your dedication, even if they had all the money in the world they would never understand.
Poor people, please don't feel bad about that stupid comment.
Have a nice day
Theoretical economics is just that: theory. People don't always buy things for functionality (otherwise I would have stopped buying bags long ago, hur hur); with things like design, many people are willing to pay more for the artist behind the design rather than pay less, but to disgruntled, underpaid factory workers.
My parents own a small family business, and it did get pretty frustrating when you have the big guys producing replicates of your products in their housebrand. In their case (and in many mass products), to sell cheap means that quality is compromised. And they're no experts, they're just in it for the money, they don't realise that there are people who WILL care that a different material is used, etc. And these are the people who will pay more because they recognise quality and effort. (And we've been doing pretty well, I might add. Well enough to feed three kids and send one to Australia, at least. :p) Of course, media and exposure helps much. Unsolicited praises of industry experts in print; we've never forked out any extra money for advertisement.
Eventually, one can only hope it pays off, but if it doesn't, we have to realise that passion is by nature intrinsically rewarding. Not everything can be measure in dollars and cents. That's life, and that's what makes us different from them. :)
Whatever. People will always prefer 'handmade' over 'factorymade'.
Well, I have a temper, so my reply would have been full of swear words, and I would have told this guy where to stuff his advice.
I'm Chinese and I can totally imagine some Chinese businessperson saying that kind of crap. =T What an ass. You could say that the two of you are serving two different markets, you're serving those who appreciate handmade products (which is a more high-end market) and theirs are for those still stuck in the disposable economy, a low end market. If they want to make cheap crap, go ahead, but you've got your priceless creativity and you'll stay ahead of the game. =) I'm wet behind the ears myself, but that's what all designers must realize, you've got to keep working on new things, new ideas. Good luck, babe!
What a jerk! He is comparing apples to oranges. Mass produced and hand made items are two separate markets. And if he were to buy one of your items and then mass produce it he would be stealing your ideas. Which says even more about the kind of person he is. I'm sorry you had to encounter such a nasty person.
